At the start of the game, the gobbler character is located centrally near the bottom of the maze. That figure is expressed as a simple yellow dot, somewhat larger than the power capsules, with a V-shaped aperture which opens and closes in mechanical fashion like a mouth as it travels the maze. Distinctive "gobbling" noises accompany this action. If fate (or a slight miscalculation) causes the gobbler to fall prey to one of the monsters, the action freezes, and the gobbler is deflated, folding back on itself, making a sympathetic whining sound, and disappearing with a star-burst. The four monster characters are identical except that one is red, one blue, one turquoise, and one orange. They are about equal in size to the gobbler, but are shaped like bell jars. The bottom of each figure is contoured to stimulate three short appendages which move as the monster travels about the maze.
There is a flash-based MMO produced in France called Dofus, which in spite of its limited graphics has quite some success. So the makers, Ankama Games, started to produce an improved version called Wakfu, currently in closed beta. And this time they are using their game world to not only make an MMO, but also an Anime cartoon tie-in. This trailer is showing bits of both. I did like the strategic turn-based combat of Dofus, but found the game overall to be a bit too grindy. It is surprising how Korean a game made in France can feel. :) As I mentioned before, I don't think that feature lists are all that important. The implementation, and how the features interact with each other are far more vital. For example siege warfare in WoW is going to be strictly localized to one single PvP zone, just a fun diversion.
It's not immediately obvious, but the main change after Tortage is the complete lack of faction. After level 20, when you return to your homeland, you don't stand for anything in particular any more. The quest contacts approach you not as a potential hero or ally, but as a runner of errands. Yes, the player has a culture - Stygian, Cimmerian or Aquilonian - but that's not the same as having a faction. Factions cause conflict.

I remember when I first began playing MMORPGs It took me forever to type simple sentences as I was only 12 years old at the time. The game I began my MMORPG career with was Ultima Online, and like every other MMORPG the game had a community, and if I wanted to find some people to hunt with or trade with, I'd have to talk to them. The only real way to get better at something, it to keep doing it; and playing MMORPGs forces you to interact with people online.

From hindsight, it seemed the more memorable moments of those times centered on corpse retrieval. Because of the idiosyncracies of the game at that time (long since changed/rectified), corpse retrieval was a commitment that could last hours with in some cases real doubt about the outcome and whether someone's game livelihood could be salvaged. By nostalgia, the best runs were great cocktails of challenge and desperation. Strictly speaking, we were on occasion seriously penalized. Say four players at 2 hours each that is an 8 hour ka-ching. Yet is it that simple? With MMORPGs, corpse runs seem to have less an aura of desperate engagement and more of a flavor of inconvenience. It is as if both sides (the benefactors, the beneficiary) understand the weights and measures implied by the design of the world. There is an underlying cost/benefit: time is money, and money is resources, whether it be hired hands or a "SOW" (haste spell, EQ), etc. Altruism or not is beside the point - penalties exist palpably within a larger fabric of world transactions.
